Xconomy names Xagenic to 2012’s Biotech Startup Class

MI spin-off company one of 30 listed in North America and the United Kingdom

Xconomy, a U.S.-based business news website, named Xagenic to its 2012 Biotech Startup Class.

Luke Timmerman‘s article, published December 3, 2012, sited Xagenic as one of only 30 “exciting biotech startups” to raise significant venture capital (at least $5 million) in the life sciences sector.

Xagenic, founded by Drs. Shana Kelley and Ted Sargent at the University of Toronto, was also the only Canadian company named to the list.

Happy New Year. Here’s a snapshot of some spin-off stories you may have missed over the holiday break:

Flybits and Flybits Lite, the startup company’s context-aware mobile technology that anyone can use, was mentioned in a Smithsonian.com article as one of six technologies changing the way the way humans live.
ApneaDx was featured in a company profile post on the MaRS Blog: “ApneaDx: First we take Ontario, then we take the world.”
ScarX Therapeutics launched its website.

OtoSim Inc. co-founder Dr. Vito Forte was selected as a recipient of the 2013 Canadian Association of Medical Educators (CAME) Certificate of Merit Award, which promotes medical education in Canadian medical schools while recognizing and rewarding faculty’s commitment to medical education. Dr. Forte will receive his certificate at the upcoming Canadian Conference on Medical Education (CCME) in Quebec City on Sunday, April 21, 2013. As co-founder of OtoSim Inc., Dr. Forte is actively involved in developing a pipeline of products including the OtoSim™, OtoSim™ Pneumatic Otoscopy Trainer and OptoSim™ (to be launched in early 2013).

VitalHub’s Chart Makes Apple’s Top 80 List of Doctor Apps

VitalHub Chart has been named to Apple’s list of top 80 apps for doctors, nurses, patients and healthcare professionals in the “EMR and patient monitoring” category.

Here’s a description of the app, which is made by Toronto-based VitalHub Corp., from the Apple list curators:

“VitalHub Chart puts patient data at your fingertips. You can access the information you need any time, anywhere there is WiFi or cellular service. No more waiting for a free desktop, hunting for a workstation on wheels, or carrying printouts on rounds.”

GEN Magazine (Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology News) featured the microfluidics research of Dr. Aaron Wheeler on November 15, 2012.

Wheeler, Canada Research Chair of Bioanalytical Chemistry and an associate professor at the University of Toronto, has made an invention disclosure to MaRS Innovation; Kapplex is the start-up company created to commercialize his research.

Yonge Street Media covers Bedside Clinical Systems’ launch

Yonge Street Media, a weekly online magazine that covers talent, innovation, diversity and quality of life stories in the Toronto region, covered Bedside Clinical Systems’ (BCS) launch in their Innovation section on Wednesday, November 7, 2012.

BCS is a MaRS Innovation spin-off company created to commercialize decision-support research emerging from The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids).

Raphael Hofstein, president and CEO of MaRS Innovation, was interviewed by Huffington Post Canada business reporter Rachel Mendleson for an article about Canada’s innovation gap and the shortage of Canadian venture capital:

One of the best ways to [raise venture capital], said Raphael Hofstein, President and CEO of Toronto-based MaRS Innovation, is to increase government investment, a lesson he learned while helping to create a life sciences early-stage fund in Israel several years ago.

“Everybody told us — institutions, industry — that they will not participate unless government has a piece of the pie. So governments have to participate, certainly in the early stage,” he said.
