Dr. Andy J. Smith

President & CEO, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre

Dr. Andy J. Smith is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre inToronto, Ontario. In this role, Dr. Smith provides leadership for one of Canada’s largest academic healthsciences centres with 11,000 staff and physicians, 1,300 beds and an annual budget of more than $1Billion.

In addition, he is a Professor of Surgery at the University of Toronto. He completed medical school, including aMasters of Science, and General Surgery residency at the University of Toronto. He also completed aSurgical Oncology Fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

Upon returning to Canada, he established himself as a leader in the management of colorectal cancer. He has served as Head of the Division of General Surgery at Sunnybrook, Chair of the Division of General Surgery atthe University of Toronto and Chief of the Odette Cancer Program and Regional Vice President for CancerCare Ontario. Most recently, Dr. Smith has served Sunnybrook as its Executive Vice President, Chief Medical Executive.

He has been involved for many years in quality improvement initiatives in Ontario and is passionatelyinterested in health care leadership and the evolution of the health care system in Canada.

Each year, Sunnybrook conducts more than $100 million in research, provides educational opportunities for4,000 students and cares for 1.2 million patients. The Hospital provides a broad range of tertiary regional programs and services including specialties in cancer, cardiovascular disease, neurological disorders, high-risk obstetrics and gynaecology, orthopaedic and arthritic conditions, trauma and critical care, rehabilitation, and community care. In addition, Sunnybrook is Canada’s largest facility caring for the country’s war veterans.
